July 3, 2011 Independence Day Weekend; Holy Communion

The Conquering Addiction series continues today with a sermon on the Unforced Rhythms of Grace, living one day at a time.

At 8:00 AM the Men’s LIFE group meets for breakfast and Bible study. After church we travel to Havertown to play softball with Hope United Methodist Church at the Steel Field.

This Sunday we consider the rest of the 12 steps in recovery from addiction in this continuing sermon series on Conquering Addiction: Steps to Recovery. We will talk about essential steps to end addiction.

We expand our understanding of addiction this morning as we consider how addiction effects our whole society, not just individuals. The sermon is Conquering Addiction: Creation Set Free.

July 24, 2011 Church Picnic

The Conquering Addiction series concludes today with a specific focus on Giving Support. How do we support people who are struggling with addiction? How do we conquer co-dependence?

Today is the summer picnic for St. Luke at the Gladwyne Park in Gladwyne. We have invited Hope and Drexel Hill United Methodist Churches to come and face our formidable softball line-up. Bring food to share and enjoy a beautiful day under the Gladwyne trees.

We begin a two sermon series on prayer today titled, What Good is Prayer? This series asks the question “Why bother to pray?” When time is short, what good does prayer do? Read this wonderful Genesis passage to reflect on wrestling with God.

Continuing the What Good is Prayer? series, today we consider how prayer holds us up when we face storms and struggle. We will also think about prayer as a healing force in our personal lives and in the broader community.

We begin to prepare for the fall season this morning on the Sunday before the Labor Day weekend. Today we start a new sermon series Why Does God Allow Suffering? This is one of the most difficult questions in our faith. If we believe in an all-powerful, all-loving God, why is there so much hurt and evil in the world?

Students and teachers come into town this week preparing for the new school year. We often have visitors come to church. Please plan to come early this Sunday and be ready to provide a warm welcome to guests.
